Facebook and Divorce
Stories of Facebook affecting divorce have been rampant in the news lately. I recently stumbled upon a news story that was too good not to share. A woman living in Ohio was surprised and upset when her family revealed they had found pictures of her husband and another woman posted to Facebook. The fact that her husband was having an obvious affair was not the end though. A few weeks later dozens of wedding pictures were posted to Facebook, showing the woman’s husband and his second bride!
Social Media is providing so much ammunition and evidence for divorce lawyers nowadays. Your online presence is just as much a part of your life as your offline presence. As a divorce lawyer, my constant advice has been to be careful of what you post to online sites. It may be admissible in a court room.
The ending to the story is the husband and his first wife were married in Italy in 2005. The husband is claiming in court that the Italian paperwork was never filed correctly, therefore they were never married, and his second marriage is perfectly legal. The wife is claiming that is not true, and is going to use information from her Facebook page in the divorce proceedings.
