Valentine’s Day Divorce
Valentine’s Day has always been a holiday filled with cards, roses, and candies, but according to a recent article in The New York Post, divorce filings actually increase this time of year. “Over the past two years we’ve seen an average increase of 40 percent in the number of requests for divorce lawyers around Valentine’s Day, compared to the previous six months,” said Mark Britton, founder and CEO of Avvo.com. “Furthermore, the number of questions about divorce has soared 36 per cent during that same time. Indeed, there’s definitely a major Valentine’s spike when it comes to divorce.”
There are a couple of different theories for this shocking rise in splits around a holiday that celebrates love. One thought is that people who have been contemplating divorce want to wait until after the holidays to discuss and act on it. The other school of thought is the couple who is considering divorce, waits to see what their spouse does for them on Valentine’s Day and uses that to either reconcile or file for divorce.
According to Dan Couvrette, CEO Publisher of Divorce Magazine and DivorceMagazine.com, “February 15 is one of the busiest days in a divorce lawyer’s calendar,” Here are some things to help improve your current relationship and also help in ensure that their future relationships will be happy and fulfilling:
- Random acts of kindness
- Offer to help around the house
- Do things together but take time for yourself, too
- Have date night on a regular basis
- Keep the lines of communication open
- Say “I love you” every day
Even though Valentine’s Day only comes around once a year, you and your loved one can make everyday special. Celebrate your marriage daily and it will go a long way.
